Australian Wine Birthplace – Regional NSW
Many people who enjoy the superb wines produced from grapes grown in The Riverina might not know that New South Wales is actually the birthplace of Australian wine. Here at Zane Hills, we appreciate the depth of this history, and seek to further develop it, allowing customers to appreciate our stunning and highly-popular regional NSW wines.
About The Riverina then
Over a century ago, a Mediterranean climate, paired with a rich, natural soil, and Italian immigrants, drew winemakers to the area. With irrigation soon added, JJ McWilliam planted 35,000 vine cuttings at Hanwood – and a tradition of excellence in wine was born. Our aim has always been to add to this rich history.
About The Riverina now
Around 300,000 tonnes of grapes are harvested annually, making this the largest wine-producing region in NSW; and, at 15% of national production, the second-largest across all of Australia. Riverina wines have acquired an international renown as everyday drinking wines which offer superb value-for-money. Around half of our major wine exporters, and six of the top twenty largest companies, many still run by the original families, find their home in the richly productive Riverina wine-producing area.
